From our name, you might think the most noteworthy feature of the Lake Country region of Virginia is our scenic lakes. In truth, it's really the people. Drive down the street, and you can sense it in the waves from strangers. Ask someone for help, and you feel it in the way they reach out. And hard work? It's how we've done things here for years. So if your business depends on people — hardworking, dedicated, innovative, cooperative people — the Lake Country region, with its eager and well-trained work force, is the answer.

Yes, we have ideally situated real estate and superior supporting infrastructure. And of course, we have an enviable lake country lifestyle that offers peace and relaxation. But for business, the big advantage comes not from these tangible pleasantries — our real advantage is our people. Our people… your possibilities.

Business Climate
Low-interest seed loans are available for expanding or newly locating businesses that create 15 or more jobs. Incentives are available through several Enterprise Zones and very reasonable machinery and tool taxes.

Technology
Lake Country is committed to state-of-the-art telecommunications technology to assist industry. Fiber-optic cable, T-1 and higher connections are available to most of the area's industrial parks. Wireless communications and DSL are provided in some locations. With the completion of the first phase of the Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative Regional Backbone Initiative in 2006, virtually all locations along the 97-mile U.S. 58 corridor in Lake Country will have the availability of high speed Internet for data transfer.

Location
Lake Country is midway between Richmond International Airport and Raleigh-Durham International Airport, and has four local airports and one regional airport. Interstate 85 offers a major north-south corridor, and the four-lane U.S. 58 provides links to the Port of Virginia and Midwest markets.

Work Force Training
The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) in South Boston coordinates a wide variety of classes and degree programs from some of Virginia's finest colleges and universities. The Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center in South Hill provides access to advanced degree programs, in addition to classes in manufacturing technology, including robotics, Computer Numeric Control (CNC) and Programmable Logic Control (PLC). The Estes Center in Chase City focuses on allied health training. Training in technology fields and other areas of work force preparedness is stressed in each facility.

Modern Business and Technology Parks
Lake Country stands ready to welcome new and expanding businesses into one of three new business parks — each with high-speed telecommunications infrastructure and adjacent to U.S. 58. The 265-acre campus-style Lakeside Commerce Park near Clarksville has lots ranging from 5 to 56 acres. Fiber and higher speed telecommunications services are available. The 165-acre Riverstone Technology Park near South Boston is equipped with a broadband wireless system designed for the needs of IT, biomedical, and technical manufacturing industries and/or corporate offices in a beautiful natural setting with walking trails and greenways. The Roanoke River Regional Business Park, a 275-acre park just east of Interstate 85 at South Hill, has redundant fiber cable
infrastructure with bandwidths up to OC3, and DSL switching

Adding to these location incentives is our quality of life. Our two lakes, John H. Kerr Reservoir and Lake Gaston, have hundreds of miles of wooded shoreline. Both lakes offer boating, fishing, camping, swimming, picnicking, hiking and hunting, as well as residential opportunities. Lake Country also features small towns with quiet streets, farms with expansive views over open fields, or acres of lush forest teeming with wildlife. Multiple parks and numerous Wildlife Management Areas surround Kerr Reservoir, which is owned by the Army Corps of Engineers. A recreational trail system, which will link the entire region, is under development. Civil War history buffs will be pleased with the Staunton River Battlefield State Park, while Early American history is illuminated at Prestwould, a restored 18th century manor house and plantation.
