The Roanoke Times offered voluntary retirement
incentives to 21 employees aged 58 or older with 15 years
of service. The move comes after the paper eliminated
or froze 27 jobs in the past year. Declining ad revenues
and changes in the media marketplace, which have affected
the newspaper industry as a whole, are behind the cutbacks. (The

SunRocket Inc., a Vienna-based Internet phone
service provider, laid off 30 employees, about one-quarter
of its work force in reaction to slowing subscriber growth.
SunRocket is the second-largest provider of VOIP services
behind Vonage but faces increasing competition from other
