Robert F. Bruner, dean of the University
of Virginia’s Darden School of Business, won a European
Case Award for his case study on estimation of a discount
rate at which to value the Boeing 777 air frame, first
published in 1994. The European Case Awards honor contributions
by case study writers to management education. (News

Jim Olin, a former General Electric executive
and congressman from Roanoke, died July 30 at age 86. Olin worked at GE for 35 years,
rising to become vice president of the Salem
plant. After his retirement he won election as congressman
from Virginia’s 6th District and served five terms
before retiring in 1992. Olin, a Democrat successful
in the Republican-leaning district, served on the House
Agriculture Committee and often steered a path independent

detailed in the annual survey of America’s Best Hospitals by U.S. News & World
Report. U.Va.’s specialties ranked sixth in endocrinology;
25th in
gynecology; 26th in ear, nose and throat;
31th in
cancer; and 49th in heart. Inova Fairfax
Hospital was listed 25th in heart; 34th in
endocrinology; 38th in digestive disorders;
and 41st in gynecology. Sentara
