Cavalier Telephone Inc., a Richmond-based telecommunications company, laid off 50 workers among its 1,200 mid-Atlantic employees. The cuts came after the company streamlined its billing and service-related operations. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)

Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem cut 41 jobs in its first cutback in 10 years. The move comes as part of an efficiency effort. Eleven of the 41 positions in administrative and support jobs, not nursing, are already vacant. (The Roanoke Times)

The Defense Department announced plans to close the Foreign Supplier Assessment Center in Martinsville, eliminating at least 30 jobs.  Officials said work completed at the center, checking ownership of foreign companies with Pentagon contracts, was being provided by other agencies. The center was run by MZM Corp., whose former president, Mitchell Wade, pleaded guilty to bribery-related charges in the case of former Rep. Randy Cunningham, R-Calif. (The Washington Post)

O’Sullivan Industries, a producer of ready-to-assemble furniture sold through many big box retailers, closed its South Boston plant, eliminating 200 jobs. The company plans to consolidate production at its Lamar, Mo., facility. (Richmond Times-Dispatch)
