James S. Cheng and his wife, Jeanette Wang, of McLean, pledged $1 million to create a scholarship fund at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business for students from Asia. Cheng, who received an MBA from Darden in 1987, began Computer & Hi-Tech Management Inc. in 1994. He sold the company in 2005 and is now an angel investor. (News release)

Dr. Sarah Forbes of Newport News donated $1 million to Christopher Newport University’s merit scholarship challenge campaign. Forbes, the first woman to start her own obstetrics and gynecology practice in Newport News, received her medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1954. (Daily Press)

H. Russell “Russ” Griffith, chairman, president and CEO of Datatel Inc. of Fairfax, died in his sleep on Aug. 7 while attending an industry conference in Chicago. He was 59. Griffith joined the company in 1972 and became president and CEO in 1992.  (Business Wire)

W. Carter Younger, a partner in the Richmond office of McGuireWoods, was listed in the Lawdragon 500, a list of top litigators selected by Lawdragon quarterly from peer and client evaluations.
