of specialty chemicals, bought a South Haven, Mich. facility from DSM Pharmaceutical Products. Albemarle
plans to use the building to enhance its Fine Chemicals

Cavalier Telephone, a Richmond
telecommunications company, bought Talk America,
a Reston-based telecommunications and Internet access
provider for $251 million. The deal will put Cavalier
in the Atlanta, Cleveland
and Detroit markets. No decisions have been on layoffs; the combined company

Highland Hospitality Corp., a McLean-based
lodging real estate investment trust (REIT), bought
the Ritz-Carlton Atlanta for $79.5 million. The facility

Smithfield
Foods Inc.,
a meat-processing firm headquartered in Smithfield,
bought Premium Standard Farms Inc. in a $674 million
cash and stock deal. Although Smithfield
has made numerous acquisitions during the past few
years, the company says integrating those acquisitions,
