Greg Garrett, owner of Greg Garrett Realty in
Newport News, was named one of five recipients of the
National Association of Realtors’ Good Neighbor Awards
for community involvement. Garrett is founder of Orphan
Helpers, a nonprofit group that has raised more than
$1 million since 2000 for children in orphanages and

John C. Lanford, chairman of Adams Construction and
a board member of United Dominion Realty Trust,
received the VMI Foundation’s highest honor,
the Distinguished Service Award. Lanford is a 1952
VMI graduate and has been involved in the construction
industry since graduation, beginning with the Lanford & Slater
Construction Co. He has also been active in numerous

a division of Blacksburg’s Luna
Innovations, was listed in the Nano 50 by Nanotech
Briefs magazine. Luna’s Trimetasphere nanomaterial
was named one of the products with the greatest potential

Stanley F. Pauley, chairman and CEO of the Carpenter
Co., and his wife Dorothy gave $3 million toward
expansion of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. The
Pauleys previously gave $5 million for the project.
Pauley is chairman of the museum’s capital campaign,

Smithfield Foods Inc.,
a Smithfield-based producer of meat products, was
cited in the American Meat Institute’s
environmental awards program for achievement in environmental

Trilogy Design Group, a Norfolk advertising
agency, won a Davey Award for a sales promotion piece
created for the Hampton Roads Economic Development
Alliance. The award was given by the International

The University of Virginia Medical Center in
Charlottesville was named one of the country’s top
100 cardiology and heart surgery programs by health-care
consultant Solucient LLC. U.Va. was one of only 30
programs in a teaching hospital to be honored. This
is the third year in a row U.Va. has been cited by
