The Daily Press of Newport News announced plans
to lay off eight employees and cut 18 positions. The
move comes as part of an effort by its Chicago-based
parent, Tribune Co., to combat declining circulation
figures and advertising revenue through belt-tightening

Smithfield Foods Inc. is closing its Valleydale
Foods pork-processing plant in Salem, a move
that will eliminate more than 300 jobs. Valleydale
has operated in Salem since 1936. it was bought by
Smithfield in 1992. Smithfield decided that the plant
is too old and small.
