The Virginia Business Travel Association established a scholarship to be named in honor of Rob Haislip, manager of corporate services for Covington International Travel in Glen Allen. The $2,500 award will be available for persons wishing to further their career in travel through continuing education. (Press release)

Northrop Grumman Newport News received the Star rating from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration for the third year in a row. The award represents the highest rating for excellence in workplace health and safety. (Press release)

Carl W. Smith, former head of Amvest Corp., a Charlottesville energy company, and a noted benefactor of the University of Virginia, died Dec. 9, 2005 at the age of 78. A 1951 graduate of U.Va,, Smith and his wife Hunter gave more than $50 million to the university. He served on U.Va.’s Board of Visitors and also as a trustee of the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration Foundation. (The Daily Progress)

 Becky Stewart, vice president of the submarine program at Northrop Grumman Newport News, received the Women in Business achievement award from Inside Business, a weekly journal covering Hampton Roads. The award honors women who have made an impact on the business community and Hampton Roads economy. Stewart joined Northrop in 1982 as a technical planner. (Press release)

The University of Virginia Health System received a $45 million gift from The Ivy Foundation, a Charlottesville-based nonprofit focused on research and patient care at U.Va. The gift, one of the largest in university history, will fund biomedical research aimed at treatment and cures, as well as new facilities for clinical research and patient care.
