AOL, a Dulles-based provider
of Internet services, announced plans to close call
centers in
New Mexico and
Arizona, laying off 1,400 workers. The company will
also sell a call center in
Utah that employs another 400 people. The moves are part of AOL’s move
to a business model of free online services, similar to those of Yahoo and Google.
The company said earlier this year it would reduce its work force by 5,000 workers.
The latest moves bring the total so far to 4,000. (CNET)
