ABB Inc., a manufacturer of power and automation
products, plans to invest $28 million and create 157
jobs at its Virginia
facilities. The company produces dry and vacuum cast
transformers in Bland County, and liquid-cooled transformers
in Halifax County. Virginia competed with a number of foreign countries for the investment. (News

Albemarle Corp., a Richmond-based chemical
products company, plans to build a new plant in China for the production
of fire-resistant polymer systems and resins to be

Amerigroup Corp.,
a Virginia Beach provider of managed care for recipients
of Medicaid and other government programs, will add
350 jobs at its administrative center, including call-center
workers, nurses, and information technology workers.
Amerigroup has
been growing in several markets around the country,

AVID Medical Inc. plans to invest $8 million
in an expansion of its James City County facility, creating 303 jobs. The company produces custom procedure-ready
trays for the health-care industry and will double
its existing 90,000-square-foot operation. Virginia

Carilion Heath
Systems, a Roanoke-based operator of hospitals
in Southwest Virginia, announced
a $100 million, seven-year plan to transform itself
into Carilion Clinic, a physician-based research
operation based on the model of the Mayo Clinic.
Carilion will
continue to operate its hospitals but will hire a
substantial number of physicians and widen its presence

consultant, opened a branch office in Palatine, Ill. outside Chicago. Echelon focuses on helping businesses

MW Manufacturers Inc. plans to invest $23 million
in an expansion of its Rocky Mount production facility where it produces window and door
products for the residential construction industry.
The investment will create 175 jobs. Virginia

Smithfield Packing Co. is expanding pork production
at its Elon, N.C. plant, increasing annual
production from nine million pounds to 16 million pounds.
