ITT Industries Night Vision has rebounded from a federal fine to win a major military contract.

Earlier this year, the State Department fined the Roanoke County-based defense contractor $8 million for “careless actions” after several night-vision products sold to foreign customers went missing. Now, however, the company has captured a five-year contract potentially worth $1.39 billion from the U.S. Army Contracting Agency of White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.

The deal, one of two awards under the Omnibus VII night-vision contract, calls for the subsidiary of New York-based ITT Industries Inc. to deliver night-vision devices and goggles worth $160 million and production facilities and equipment worth $40 million.

“We are committed to supplying our soldiers with the lifesaving night-vision technology they need to perform their critical missions safely,” says Larry Curfiss, vice president and director of business development for ITT Industries.

The company is already anticipating more work in light of congressional approval of an emergency supplemental wartime appropriations package, which includes $859 million for night-vision equipment. ITT says that it will invest $51.1 million to expand its facilities in Roanoke County and create 250 new jobs.

The 1,100-employee company is the world’s leading developer, producer and supplier of third-generation image intensifier tubes and systems. It provides night-vision equipment to the United States, its allies and other friendly nations, including Australia, Switzerland, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Turkey.

ITT Industries Night Vision will begin delivering night-vision units to its new customer in January.
