Hampton’s Fort Monroe is the sole Virginia facility selected for shutdown on a national list of proposed military base closings.

Closing the 180-year-old base would affect more than 3,000 military and civilian jobs. A proposed realignment at Fort Eustis in Newport News could result in the loss of more than 2,000 jobs.

Meanwhile, the number of jobs could increase at other Virginia bases under the Department of Defense proposal. Fort Belvoir, for example, would gain more than 9,000 jobs and a new military hospital, and Fort Lee would gain more than 7,000 positions.

Bases in South Hampton Roads are expected to add 5,100 military and civilian jobs. That total includes 2,800 jobs at the Norfolk Naval Station and 2,000 jobs at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth.

Overall, the state is expected to have a net loss of more than 1,500 jobs. Virginia has 31 military bases. A federal panel will review the Pentagon list before it’s submitted to Congress and the president for approval.
