Country club memberships and use of the company jet are very appealing. But more and more, executives are seeing the value of health-related benefits. While fitness club memberships are still popular with the suit set, the executive physical does more than provide peace of mind for the Type A personalities carrying the company load; it also makes it easy for them to improve their health and lifestyles. It’s an all-day, stem to stern checkup that costs thousands of dollars. But when it’s done, executives and their bosses are more confident about what the future holds healthwise for a company’s key leaders.

“This type of physical is designed to provide early detection of issues that may not pop up” under a less rigorous examination, says Linda Nash, CEO of Partner MD in Richmond, a boutique medical practice that provides executive physicals to companies such as The Brink’s Co. and Capital One Financial Corp.

A full, detailed executive physical can cost as much as $3,500. Lab work goes significantly beyond the routine. Every significant body part is scanned. And experts in areas such as nutrition and physiology contribute to a lifestyle plan to ensure continued good health.

Companies love the physical, because they help keep their top-tier executives ready and alert to go full bore. And executives love the physicials because they get individualized plans developed by experts to keep them in ace condition.

Below are some of the components included in Partner MD’s executive physical. Perhaps the most remarkable is an hourlong lunch with a doctor to ask any questions.
• Review of family and personal health history, activity and nutrition survey, and stress survey
• Extensive laboratory testing and visual acuity test
• Advanced lipid analysis
• Body composition analysis
• Stress management and peak performance assessment
• Therapeutic massage and consultation with massage therapist
• Audiogram
• BMI calculation
• Life expectancy estimate
