The Government Accountability Office rejected Metro Machine Corp.’s protest of Navy contract awards. Metro objected to a $228 million bulk contract awarded to Norshipco Inc. for work on a single class of vessels. Previously, Navy contracts had been a ship-by-ship basis. The GAO said the Navy’s evaluation of proposals by Metro, Norshipco and another, unnamed bidder, had been adequate. (The Virginian-Pilot)

Virginia is seeking refunding of $1.4 million of incentive grants to Johnson & Johnson for failing to reach employment goals set when the company opened its Spectacle Lens Group division in Roanoke. The 1999 deal called for Johnson & Johnson to employ 600 workers within three years of shipping lenses from the facility. Full-time jobs at the plant totaled 179 in April. The lens group is being sold to Essilor Inc. and state and city officials want the return of some of the incentive money tied to job creation. (The Roanoke Times)
