The Government Accountability Office rejected Metro
Machine Corp.’s protest of Navy contract awards.
Metro objected to a $228 million bulk contract awarded
to Norshipco Inc. for work on a single class
of vessels. Previously, Navy contracts had been a
ship-by-ship basis. The GAO said the Navy’s evaluation
of proposals by Metro, Norshipco and another, unnamed
bidder, had been adequate. (The Virginian-Pilot)
Virginia is seeking refunding of $1.4 million
of incentive grants to Johnson & Johnson for
failing to reach employment goals set when the company
opened its Spectacle Lens Group division in Roanoke.
The 1999 deal called for Johnson & Johnson to employ
600 workers within three years of shipping lenses from
the facility. Full-time jobs at the plant totaled 179
in April. The lens group is being sold to Essilor Inc.
and state and city officials want the return of some
of the incentive money tied to job creation. (The
