MCI, an Ashburn-based telecommunications company, extended its sponsorship of the Professional Golf Association through 2010. The MCI Heritage Golf Tournament at Hilton Head Island, S.C., would have expired in 2006. MCI has been a PGA sponsor since 1987. (8/18/04, PR Newswire)

Zel Technologies Inc. of Hampton, a security consulting firm that manages security projects for the Virginia Port Authority, chose Actcom Security Solutions, a Virginia Beach-based security firm, to provide electronic security and intruder detection systems in port complexes throughout Virginia. Nextel Communications Inc., a Reston telecommunications company, signed a 10-year agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority, to provide wireless services at 15 TVA facilities in three states. Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech, received $2.9 million from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases to design and build a data management system for collecting, storing and researching data for a biodefense proteomics research database.
