Around the Old Dominion

Peddling Richmond

May 2004

Richmond will soon get some free coast-to-coast publicity courtesy of the CapTech Classic. The cycling event on May 8, will be broadcast on Fox Sports Net to 75 million homes nationwide in early June.

Organizers say that besides covering the race the network’s coverage will include some “vignettes” of the host city. The course itself begins and ends on Canal and 8th Street and will take riders through the heart of downtown Richmond, traversing much of the city’s central business district.

This is the event’s second year. Its lead sponsor is Richmond-based software consulting firm CapTech Ventures. It is also the first event of the fledgling World Cycling Series, which includes several more races this year, including events in San Francisco and San Rafael, Calif. “As the first race in the series, we know that everybody will be watching to see how it goes,” says Tim Miller, the event’s executive director.
