The Old Dominion University College of Engineering and Technology promotes the advancement of engineering knowledge by providing a supportive learning environment to students, faculty, industry, government and military agencies. Students are encouraged to learn hands-on engineering applications by working at one of our many research centers such as the Langley Full-Scale Wind Tunnel or the Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center.

Students receive traditional laboratory and classroom instruction and partake in industry projects for concerns like NASA, Northrop Grumman Newport News, W.R. Systems, Clark-Nexsen, and the U.S. Joint Forces Command. The Old Dominion University College of Sciences' degree programs are designed to prepare students for careers in the sciences or to lay broad foundations for specialized training in these fields of knowledge.

VCU School of Engineering offers an exciting and leading-edge family of degree options in vital engineering disciplines and computer science. Programs of study emphasize the personalization of coursework and research topics to fit the needs of the student. Engineering and programming courses are offered early on in the freshman year. Independent study, hands-on project work and undergraduate research are highlighted for engineering and computer science students.

Graduate degrees cover high-impact topics at the exciting intersection of engineering, computer science, life sciences, medicine and business. Research thrust areas in engineering center on Life Sciences, Micro-Nanotechnology, and Manufacturing and Design. VCU School of Engineering is located at 601 West Main Street in a 120,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility. Specialty labs and centers include the C. Kenneth and Diane Harris Wright Virginia Microelectronics Center (7,500 square feet of Class 1000 clean room space) and the Center for Bioelectronics, Biosensors and Biochips (C3B). Biomedical Engineering enjoys additional square footage on the VCU Medical Campus.

Enrollment includes approximately 1,100 undergraduates and 150 graduate students. A faculty size approaching 50 assures a close interaction between student / teacher and represents a cornerstone of the educational programs found at VCU School of Engineering.

In fact, VMI’s Civil Engineering program is ranked 7th, Electrical Engineering is ranked 14th, and Mechanical is 15th in the nation.

VMI offers a balance between theory and practical, hands-on engineering. Most of the Engineering professors have industrial experience and are licensed professional engineers who hold a doctoral degree. They offer laboratory and design experiences in their classes.
