John Kluge, a billionaire
businessman and philanthropist, announced a matching
$1 million gift to the Commonwealth of Virginia’s
Brown vs. Board of Education Scholarship Program.
The program was created by the General Assembly
to provide educational opportunities to black
Virginians whose public educations were closed
between 1954 and 1964 in the effort to block integration
of the state’s public school system. Kluge,
a resident for many years of Albemarle County,
