Return to Virginia Business - September 2003

Letters to the Editor

Q is king for this bank president

The March issue of Virginia Business featured an article by Joshua Covington titled “B-B-Q King: I hear a pig calling my name.” What a great article! As a person who enjoys Q, I found the article enjoyable, and I am excited to tell you about the James River BBQ Fest, which takes place Sept. 26 and 27 in Lynchburg’s Riverfront Festival Park.

Community First Bank, a community bank with offices in Lynchburg and its surrounding communities, is creator and sponsor of the Fest — a Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanctioned event. In researching the term barbecue, barbeque or BBQ, it is fascinating and overwhelming to read what comes up on the worldwide Web. There are barbeque food safety tips, barbeque histories … even a Web site that has a 131-page document entitled “FAQ of the Internet BBQ List.”

The truth of the matter is that barbeque means different things to different people and, as Mr. Covington noted, the region of the country in which you live determines the types of barbeque, methods of preparation and sauces used. As you can tell, barbeque is a passion of mine.
