Virginia’s Technology Symposium Comes to Roanoke

Virginia Business
September 2003

Business and governmental leaders will converge this month in Roanoke to discuss solutions to today’s critical technology issues. Roanoke, ranked first in the nation for e-government according to a study by the Center for Digital Government and Government Technology magazine, will provide an ideal backdrop for COVITS 2003 — the fifth annual Commonwealth of Virginia’s Information Technology Symposium.

The conference, Sept. 21-23 at the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center, is expected to attract more than 800 attendees from business, government and academia. They will explore the challenges of merging disparate systems and organizations into a single, highly responsive and secure enterprise information technology environment. COVITS is hosted by Virginia’s Secretary of Technology George Newstrom, in partnership with Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), on behalf of Gov. Mark Warner.

“As the commonwealth embarks on one of the most sweeping reforms of information technology in the nation, COVITS 2003 will gather luminaries from across the globe to examine the challenges of integrating enterprise technology,” says Newstrom. “We all are seeking greater return on investment through an enterprise approach where all the pieces fit together and improved security protects IT assets. A symposium that brings the private and public sectors together around these common goals is bound to be the premier experience of attendees’ 2003 schedules.”

Charles Steger, president of Virginia Tech, is among the roster of speakers scheduled to deliver presentations and network with attendees at the event.

“As the needs of the Virginia Tech community grow, we seek to build upon a position as a center for IT education, implementation and R&D,” says Steger. “Additionally, our ties to the impressive progress that has made the commonwealth a leader in technology integration and e-government have never been stronger. These are some of the reasons why I am delighted that Virginia Tech is the Platinum sponsor of COVITS 2003, and why I personally urge you to register today for this landmark summit. Virginia Tech will do its part to welcome business and governmental leaders to the expanding technology corridor of Southwest Virginia, and to ensure they take away important lessons and contacts that will make them even more successful.”

Many of the executives presenting at COVITS represent Virginia-based organizations. For example, speaking on Sept. 22 is Alfred Mockett, Chairman and CEO of AMS, a premier business and information technology consulting firm based in Fairfax.

“As a global business and information technology consulting firm, AMS serves customers in the government, financial services and communications industries around the world. We have a long-term commitment to evolving with our customers, and, as a Virginia-based business, we have a particularly focused dedication to support the commonwealth’s leveraging technologies to enable transformation to digital government,” says Mockett. “Having partnered with Virginia on enterprise award-winning tax and procurement initiatives as well as numerous county and municipality engagements, AMS is pleased to support COVITS, where thought leaders will join together to address the opportunities and challenges of enabling the business of government through an enterprise view of technology.”

Also scheduled to address attendees is Randolph Blazer, chairman and CEO of BearingPoint Inc., headquartered in McLean. “Realizing BearingPoint’s vision of becoming the world’s most influential and respected business advisor and systems integrator relies heavily upon empowerment of our people and our clients,” Blazer says. “I can’t think of a more empowering agenda than what our company’s host state — the commonwealth of Virginia — has planned for its technology symposium this year. I’m pleased BearingPoint is a sponsor of COVITS 2003, and urge you to get involved as well.”
