WINCHESTER — Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury, SVWC, is expanding its facilities to offer more individual resident housing. This building phase will increase the number of independent living cottages from 26 to 49. Since it opened its doors in 1987, SVWC has added an Assisted Living apartment building, cottages, and has had major renovations to its 65-acre wooded campus. It is an accredited Continuing Care Retirement Community that offers a life care contract, usually only offered at much larger facilities. www.svwc.org

WILLIAMSBURG — WindsorMeade of Williamsburg is a new retirement community being developed by Virginia United Methodist Homes, nestled among 106 acres of protected woodlands. The new development offers a retirement lifestyle that incorporates healthy living, easy access to major shopping centers and close proximity to area military bases. WindsorMeade embraces a holistic philosophy to health and wellness that allows residents to choose their personal pathways to well being. Amenities include: a pool for aquatic aerobic exercise as well as a 25-meter lap pool for distance swimmers, an indoor walking track, tennis courts, a whirlpool for therapy and relaxation, and trainers. VIRGINIA BEACH — Westminster-Canterbury on the Chesapeake Bay was founded in 1982 on a 12-acre site, beginning as a retirement community with 338 apartment residences in a 14-story tower, six villas in an adjacent Casa del Playa condominium complex, 56 assisted living suites and a licensed nursing home certified for 75 residents. In December 2001, Westminster-Canterbury completed an $80 million expansion, the largest capital investment in Virginia Beach’s history. Phase II of Westminster-Canterbury included a new 14-story West Tower with 164 independent living apartments, a covered 435-vehicle parking garage and extensive renovations of the community’s common areas. Total living facilities now include 445 independent living apartments, six villas, 91 assisted living residences and 75 licensed nursing home beds, 58 of which are in private suites, in an on-site healthcare center. www.wcbay.com

NEWPORT NEWS — The Arbors at Port Warwick recently opened its 96-unit luxury apartment residence offering “catered retirement living” for seniors on the Virginia Peninsula in Newport News. Introduced by Virginia Health Services, The Arbors offer seniors the opportunity to rent their own apartments. Unlike many other senior residences, no entrance fees are required. The apartments are simply rented on an annual basis. The community offers spacious common areas, several dining venues, retail shops on the ground floor, garden and sunrooms, a grand lobby, elevators, and the many amenities in surrounding Port Warwick. The development allows seniors 55 years of age and over to create a new apartment residence lifestyle which offers the best amenities of retirement. A professional staff is available 24-hours a day. MIDLOTHIAN — Founders Bridge is a golf course community of 300 lots in Chesterfield and Powhatan Counties on the James River. W. S. Carnes Inc. purchased a section of lots that targets upscale retirement occupants. Homes have one and two bedrooms on the first floor, libraries, and open floor plans, hardwood floors, prewiring for computers and security, and beautifully landscaped yards. Homebuyers are able to pick form existing floor plans or completely customize homes to their satisfaction. Although this section of Founders Bridge is not directly tied to an age restriction, it is geared to attract the younger empty nester or “near” empty nester who appreciates quality construction in an environment that is suited for their lifestyle.

CHESTERFIELD — Braxton, a W. S. Carnes custom community, is a new community for people 55 and older interested in a no-maintenance property, with monthly fees covering total lawn care, gutter cleaning, and snow removal. These two and three bedroom brick patio homes with garages have wider door openings to accommodate wheel chairs, grab bars in the showers and tubs, lots of lighting, hardwood floors, ceramic tile baths and nine foot ceilings. Braxton is located on 50 acres in Chesterfield County. Upon completion it will have 134 home sites. Lot sizes are approximately 65 to 70 feet by 100 feet. Homes are priced between $200,000 and $275,000. The Club House fronts a well stocked fishing pond. Currently there are 106 homeowners living in Braxton.
