Massey Energy Co., a Richmond-based coal producer, has sold a majority interest in its synthetic fuel-producing subsidiary, Appalachian Synfuel LLC. An unidentified affiliate of a major financial institution acquired the interest effective March 15. (PR Newswire, 03/21/01)

ClearCross Inc., an international trade logistics firm headquartered in Reston, and Atrion International, Inc. have completed the merger of the two companies. Net2000 Communications, Inc., a Herndon-based provider of integrated broadband communications services, has completed its acquisition of San Jose, Calif.-based Vision I.T., an integrator of interactive video, data and network services. The acquisition will allow Net2000 to expand its interactive video servi es and enhance Vision I.T.'s expertise in network and videoconferencing for high-end business customers. Advance Auto Parts, a Roanoke-based auto parts chain, and Carport Auto Parts announced that they have signed a definitive agreement whereby Advance would acquire the 51 stores that Carport operates in Alabama and Mississippi. Financial terms were not disclosed. (PR Newswire, 03/15/01)

Friedman, Billings, Ramsey Group Inc., an Arlington-based securities holding company, announced that the Federal Reserve Board has approved the company's proposed acquisition of Rushmore Trust and Savings FSB, and its parent company, Money Management Associates LP, of Bethesda, Md. The acquisition will more than double FBR's assets under management. FBR is the first securities firm engaged principally in investment and merchant banking to have been approved by the board under the 1999 Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. (PR Newswire, 03/14/01)

Performance Food Group Co., a Richmond-based restaurant distributor, plans to acquire Empire Seafood Holding Corp. of Miami, a leading Florida seafood distributor. Vastera Inc., a Dulles-based software provider, has agreed to acquire Speedchain Network Ltd. of London for about $14 million in stock. Main Street Newspapers Inc. has acquired Salem Publishing Company Inc., a publisher of four Roanoke Valley Community Newspapers. For an undisclosed purchase price, Main Street will now publish the Salem Times-Register, New Castle Record, Fincastle Herald and the Vinton Messenger which have a combined circulation of about 14,000 subscribers. Newport News Shipbuilding, has awarded Lockheed Martin Integrated Systems, Inc. of Owego, N.Y., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation, a $446 million subcontract to provide the warfare system for the U.S. Navy's next nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, CVN 77. Lee Technologies Group, a Fairfax-based provider of data-center environmental products and services, has been awarded a 10-year, $13 million federal contract to monitor technical aspects of mission-critical data-center equipment, including generators, power supplies and fire suppression systems. Xpedior Inc., a Chicago consulting firm 80 percent owned by Ashburn-based PSINet Inc., announced plans to lay off 300 workers, about a third of them in its Alexandria office. Xpedior will cut 42 percent of its staff by closing offices in New York, Dallas, San Jose and Denver as well as laying off workers in its Chicago headquarters and Alexandria, which will lose about 100 of its nearly 200 employees. Global One, a Reston-based and wholly owned subsidiary of France Telecom, will lay off 100 employees in coming weeks, most of whom work in its Reston headquarters. Global One offers international telephone and data-communications services to businesses. (The Washington Post, 03/20/01)

Ethyl Corp., a Richmond-based manufacturer of chemical additives for fuels and lubricants, has eliminated 40 positions in Richmond and offered early retirement to 128 employees are eligible for early retirement. (The Richmond Times-Dispatch, 03/13/01)

CyberCash Inc., a Reston-based developer and provider of Internet payment software and services, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and plans to liquidate. Circuit City Stores Inc., a Richmond-based consumer electronics retailer, laid off 275 employees at its corporate headquarters in Richmond and an additional 25 jobs at divisional offices in the first major job cut in the firm’s 52-year history. (The Richmond Times-Dispatch, 03/01/01)

The Spiegel Group, a Chicago-based specialty retailer, announced 40 programmers would be laid off at its Hampton Roads offices as it consolidates the company’s nationwide computer operations to the Chicago area.
