Heraclitus, a famous philosopher during 540 B.C. once said "Nothing endures but change," and TUCON Construction Corp. has certainly endured some change these past 18 years. TUCON was founded in 1983 by Eric R. Wells as a base building Tilt-up Concrete General Contractor. Today, TUCON serves the development community performing all aspects of commercial construction; including pre-construction services, design-build construction, base-building construction, tenant improvements, and at risk mission-critical facilities construction management. But the biggest change is that TUCON is no longer owned solely by Wells, but by the employees themselves, under the auspices of an Employee Stock Ownership Plan or ESOP. "The key executives and I have worked for the past two years to develop a team of high level employees within the company, that could successfully manage TUCON into the future," states Wells, now Chairman. "We feel confident these people are in place." Due to tremendous growth over the past couple of years, TUCON expanded its corporate headquarters recently to over 35,000 square feet. Located just north of Dulles Airport in the Mercure Business Park in Dulles, Virginia, this facility accommodates the 130+ employees on staff. With the human resources and technical capabilities in place, TUCON is emerging as a major player in the general contracting business, including expansion of selective opportunities on the national level. TUCON Construction attributes its success and growth to a combination of well trained, qualified staff teaming with high quality customers. TUCON has broadened its customer base and expanded its current market through careful target marketing, high customer satisfaction and quality assurance programs. The company focuses on four specific construction types: Flex-Industrial Buildings, Multi-Story Offices, High-Tech/Mission Critical Facilities, and Tenant Interiors/Renovations. "While we are focusing on these specific target markets, many of our team members also have extensive experience in schools, hotels, retail and government contracting," says President Keith Maddox. TUCON plans to maintain its growth by refining current procedures, expanding marketing efforts and meeting current customer satisfaction goals to generate repeat business with all of its clients. Some of TUCON’s most recent projects include: To provide turnkey services to clients, TUCON can self perform the drywall, carpentry and related services through its WestDulles Contracting team. To meet all client needs, TUCON maintains strong relationships with the area’s trades who partner to provide the best prices and production for each project. TUCON uses the latest software programs such as Primavera Expedition for contract control, Microsoft Project and Primavera’s SureTrak for scheduling, AutoCAD 2000 and others to provide optimal performance in maintaining records and managing work. Detailed schedules, current logs and electronic files are a requirement of quality projects. TUCON Construction has one of the best safety programs in the business, with an aggressive approach to the business of safety.
