Newport News Tourism Development Office | Newport News Marriott at City Center

A range of facilities on the Peninsula
Newport News includes a range of small to mid-size conference facilities that offer well-appointed accommodations at moderate prices. The Marriott Newport News at City Center opened in July, adding a large, upscale conference center to the area. Newport News offers a full experience for the conference attendee looking for something to do when the meetings are over. Its attractions include a combination of America’s early history, the maritime and military industries and sunny beaches. Visitors can view more than 35,000 nautical items at The Mariners’ Museum, see animals native to Virginia at the Virginia Living Museum, explore the transformation of military vehicles at the U.S. Army Transportation System and trace history of the U.S. military from the Revolutionary War until present times at the Virginia War Museum.

For the outdoor enthusiast, Newport News offers championship golf, mountain biking and hiking trails, disc golf, tennis courts, fresh and saltwater fishing and the East Coast’s only five-star archery range. Situated on the eastern edge of the Virginia Peninsula, Newport News is in an ideal location, just a short drive to Virginia Beach or the attractions at Colonial Williamsburg. The city is easily accessible by car and offers an international airport.

Other unique venues include facilities at the Virginia Living Museum, Virginia War Museum and the Mariners’ Museum. The Newport News Marriott at City Center brought an upscale, full-service hotel and conference center to the eastern Peninsula. The response has been more than welcoming. Within one month of opening in June, the four-star luxury hotel had occupancy rates of 85 percent. The 11-story, elegant hotel was designed to be the area’s premier conference facility and a leading choice for leisure travelers. The conference center offers a state-of-the-art conference facility, including a 12,000-square-foot Grand Ballroom – the largest in Newport News – a 4,200-square-foot junior ballroom and a 6,500-square-foot rotunda, which is a glass-encased atrium. The facility can fit 1,000 people for a banquet. An executive boardroom on the 10th floor of the hotel offers sweeping views of the city.

The hotel includes 256 contemporary, luxurious guest rooms, and offers guests a health club and fitness center, an indoor pool and business center. The Newport News Marriott, is the focal point of the high-profile Newport News’ City Center at Oyster Point, a mixed-use “new urban” development that created a sense of downtown for the city. The hotel, Class A office space, retail and upscale residences surround a five-acre fountain and public plaza. The development is a $425 million project that is expected to be completed in 2010.
