The “City of Firsts”
The birthplace of the NASA space program, the nation’s
first English-style Christmas and the first training
ground for America’s astronauts. It’s no
wonder Hampton is sometimes referred to as “The
City of Firsts.” Hampton, located in the center
of the Hampton Roads region, offers a dynamic waterfront
with shores on the Chesapeake Bay, the Hampton River
and the Hampton Roads harbor. The city offers unique
historic attractions, art festivals and a variety of
museums for visitors. Guests can see America’s
largest stone fort at the Casemate Museum at Fort Monroe,
tour the oldest African-American museum in the United
States (the Hampton University museum), take a cruise
of the harbor and bay on Miss Hampton II Harbor Cruises,
and examine space and air exploration at the Virginia
Air & Space Center.
The 344,000 square-foot Hampton Roads Convention Center
opened last year and is among some of the city’s
best shopping and entertainment locations. The center
is adjacent to The Power Plant of Hampton Roads, a mixed-use
retail and entertainment development anchored by Bass
Pro Shops Outdoor World. The center’s in-store,
interactive exhibits include a 19,000-gallon aquarium.

The 344,000-square-foot Hampton Roads Convention Center
offers 160,000 square feet of high-tech meeting and
exhibition space for conferences, meetings, and trade
and consumer shows. The CAT 5e network cable and television
distribution system, offering secure and fast connection,
is installed throughout the convention center, along
with telephone service and wireless Internet. Data ports
are available in the center’s 35 meeting rooms
and its exhibit hall.
The center’s 108,000-square-foot exhibit hall
can divide into three sections, and the oversized freight-loading
doors move exhibits in and out of the center easily.
The 28,000-square-foot ballroom can seat 2,000 people
in a banquet setting or be separated into seven halls.
The center, which opened in 2005, can handle 14,000
people at a time.
Conference delegates can relax in the convention center’s
Cyber Café, which offers free wireless Internet
access, or take a break outside on the center’s
terrace, which can also be used for an evening reception.
The Hampton Coliseum is adjacent to the convention
center and features an open arena floor that can hold
11,000 people. The arena provides 26,263 square feet
of meeting space, including banquet space for 2,000
and two exhibition areas.
